Trump moves ahead with tariffs, offers relief to some allies, invites others to negotiate
The tariffs, which take effect in 15 days, initially will not apply to metals shipments from Canada and Mexico so that officials can assess progress toward a new North American Free Trade Agreement, according to a senior administration official. Some other countries also may seek exemptions by addressing what the Trump administration calls a threat to national security caused by their products, the official said.
