In Sight: For photographers, it's all about access

I've always been impressed by photographers who achieve a true level of access and intimacy with their subjects. As they fade into the background, they give us an unexpected, unrehearsed and unrivaled look at the lives of the men and women in the news.

When I first joined The Washington Post and delved deeply into the work of our award-winning staff photographers, Melina Mara's work following the country's political leaders instantly caught my eye. She has covered it all — from Bill Clinton's run for president to Hillary Clinton's own bid for the highest office in the land. But it's her work on Capitol Hill that's particularly impressive: She is one of the best political photographers here, and the secret to that success is access.

We only have to look at the work she has done on House Speaker Paul D. Ryan as she's enjoyed the kind of unprecedented entree that only comes through years of professionalism and dedication. As Ryan (R-Wis.) announced this week that he was retiring from political life, my colleague Marisa Schwartz Taylor dug into Melina's work to bring us a behind-the-scenes look at the speaker's life on Capitol Hill. — Olivier Laurent
