DeVos confirmed for education post as Pence casts historic tiebreaking vote
Every Democrat in the Senate voted against Betsy DeVos, as did two Republicans, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, who said they do not think that she was qualified for the job. It marked the first time a vice president's tie-breaking vote was needed to confirm a Cabinet secretary.
Here are a few things you may not know about the new education secretary
For one thing, the billionaire businesswoman did not support Donald Trump for most of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Cabinet nominees are getting more 'no' votes than ever
Opposing senators were mostly deferential to the president's picks until about four decades ago, and more voted "no" on President Barack Obama's picks than those of any previous president. Trump's nominees are on pace to break that record.

DHS chief predicts travel ban will be reinstated, acknowledges missteps
Ahead of a key court hearing at 6 p.m. EST, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said that if he were given a second chance, he might do things differently in rolling out the order. Trump administration to approve final permit for Dakota Access pipeline, allowing project completion
The Army will allow the 1,200-mile, $3.8 billion Dakota Access oil pipeline to cross under a Missouri River reservoir in North Dakota as early as Wednesday, according to Justice Department documents. President Trump had instructed Army Corps of Engineers officials — who withheld the permit needed to complete the pipeline in December, citing the need for a more extensive environmental review — to expedite its review.

Tornado slams New Orleans, causing 'substantial' damage, dozens of injuries
Severe thunderstorms rolled through the Southeast, dropping multiple tornadoes in southern Louisiana, one of which did major damage to communities in east New Orleans — among the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Islamic State documents say some 'problem' foreign fighters are refusing to fight
Some militants from France, Belgium and Kosovo have doctor's notes explaining why they can't fight.

Trump makes false statement about U.S. murder rate to sheriffs’ group
The president claimed the country's murder rate is the highest it's been in 45 to 47 years. But the rate actually is almost at its lowest point, according to the FBI.

Melania Trump missed out on 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunity' to make millions, lawsuit says
The libel suit says an article falsely alleging the first lady once worked for an escort service hurt her chance to establish business relationships during the years in which she would be "one of the most photographed women in the world."

Open-carry advocates walked into a police station with a loaded rifle. Officers were not amused.
The pair, who were arrested, said they were testing their Second Amendment rights. Police and an open-carry group blasted the stunt: "I find this behavior totally unacceptable and irresponsible," a Michigan police chief said.

As the planet warms, doubters launch a new attack on a famous climate change study
