Authorities said that if a SWAT team member had not been able to kill the gunman, his massacre might only have been getting started. One official said the police's "militarized tactics" prevented more carnage.

New Zika transmission route suggested after caregiver develops infection
Utah health officials said a caregiver for an elderly patient with Zika has been infected, creating a mystery about how that could have happened. The caregiver has since recovered, but officials are trapping and testing mosquitoes around both individuals' homes. An official said the caregiver had not traveled to a Zika-affected country and had not had sexual contact with anyone with the virus. 
 
Anti-doping agency recommends banning Russian athletes from Rio
The global agency that polices drug cheating in sports accused the Russian government of complicity in a widespread doping regime in multiple Olympic sports, calling into question whether any Russian athletes should be permitted to compete at the Summer Olympic Games next month.

Trump allies slam GOP convention holdouts
Donald Trump's campaign manager, Paul Manafort, stoked intra-party tensions, targeting Ohio Gov. John Kasich and the Bush family. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie reminded Michigan Republicans that he and the other GOP candidates had pledged to support the party's eventual nominee.
