In major blow to Beijing, international panel rejects South China Sea claims
The Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled that China does not have historic rights to justify its expansive claims. The verdict, which strongly favored the Philippines, will undermine China's claim to sovereignty under the nine-dash line which it draws around most of the sea. China has repeatedly made clear it will not accept, recognize nor implement the ruling on the hotly contested waterway that contains some of the world's busiest shipping routes.
Dallas police chief describes stress, threats against family
On the eve of a memorial service for five slain Dallas officers, the city's police chief spoke of the toll the violence is taking on his department.
 
Two bailiffs killed, deputy sheriff shot at Michigan courthouse
An inmate being transferred out of a jail cell grabbed a deputy's gun during a fight, fatally shot the bailiffs and took "several hostages," the Berrien County sheriff said. The gunman was shot and killed by other bailiffs as he tried to flee.
 
Middle Eastern women were once discouraged from sports. A new generation now chases Olympic glory.
Sixteen Muslim countries sent nearly 160 female athletes to the London Games four years ago, and the total could rise this summer in Rio.
